Testing Methodologies
This has long been used to determine and verify pipeline integrity and obtain a variety of information about the system. The testing involves compressing a fluid in the system and, based on changes in pressure and temperature, conclusions can be calculated regarding tightness, strength and stress.
Pneumatic testing
This is more dangerous than hydrostatic testing, due to the higher energy content of compressed gas, compared to a liquid, such as water. Subsequently, this testing is limited to lower pressure and smaller systems and is most advantageous for systems that need to be dry for commissioning.
Vacuum testing
This can provide a good alternative for systems where the design may be too dangerous for pneumatic testing, or for systems designed for working under vacuum.
